@BrailSaysDoes Sword of Vengeance give +1 always or only while attuned? " Does Sword of Vengeance give +1 always or only while attuned?" @mikemearls
Only while attuned.

Is the intent that only melee weapon attacks can knock foes unconscious?
@TinyConstructHowdy! Is the intent that only melee weapon attacks can knock foes unconscious, or can mele spell attacks as well? The rule on knocking creatures unconscious is intentionally not limited to weapons.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) November 6, 2014
@TinyConstructSo melee range spells work. I think this confusion in our group stems from past editions not treating spells as “attacks” Yep, a spell attack works if it is called a melee attack in its description.

What happens to a character with the Fly spell if he is incapacitated?
@ReubenFontanaWhat happens to a character with the fly spell if he is incapacitated? Assume the flier is not the caster. Falls? Hovers? The character hovers. Check out “Flying Movement” in the Player’s Handbook (page 191).
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) January 31, 2015
@ReubenFontanaSorry, does this hold for unconscious/stunned/paralyzed/petrified? I thought so, but running into disputes. “does this hold for unconscious/stunned/paralyzed/petrified?” Yep
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) February 2, 2015
Sage Advice: Master Sage Jeremy refers to “Flying Movement” at p.191 that specify that Fly spell (or similar) can hover creature if are incapacitated. Fly spell is in the PHB p.243
Can you make unarmed strike even if you’re also wielding a weapon?
@Plaguescarred @mikemearlsCan you make unarmed strike even if you’re also wielding a weapon i.e headbutt or kick or you must be unarmed? I allow characters to make unarmed strikes with their feet, elbows, heads, etc.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 24, 2014
@PlaguescarredMe too! More wondering if the intent is for you to be unarmed to use unarmed strike or if you can even with weapon in hand The way you run it aligns with the intent.

Why is the Death domain in the DMG? PHB has both assassin and necromancer
@pukunui81 @gregbilsland @mikemearlsWhy is the Death domain in the DMG? PHB has both assassin and necromancer. Seems arbitrary to me. The Death domain and the Oathbreaker in the DMG were designed for villains.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) October 22, 2014
@pukunui81But what makes a death priest more villainous than an assassin or necromancer? Why aren’t they in the DMG too? As written, death priests pledge their souls to sinister powers. An assassin or a necromancer is, by default, more gray.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) October 22, 2014
@sagechan1but why is Kelemvor listed for death domain? villainous death domain vs upholding the sanctity of death type god A god like Kelemvor does buck the trend, which is why the DMG leaves the door open for PC clerics to take the Death domain.

When using a Diviner’s portent die, are modifiers added to the portent die
@IgnatiusJRiellWhen using a Diviner’s portent die, are modifiers added to the portent die, or is the portent die used as is? The portent die is intended to replace a d20 roll only, not any modifiers applied to it.

Most wall spells describe that you can shape it anyway you want. Wall of fire just states the wall or ring shape. Can you shape the wall like an L for instance?
@JeremyECrawford most wall spells describe either 10 foot panels (force, stone) or that you can shape it anyway you want as long as it stays on the ground (wind). Wall of fire just states the wall or ring shape. Can you shape the wall like an L for instance?
— Tomaz Saavedra (@tomsaavedra) August 19, 2020
The Wall of Fire spell in D&D can form a wall that is a straight line or a ring.
The fact that other wall spells can have other shapes has no bearing on Wall of Fire. Each spell governs only itself. #DnD https://t.co/9wSZWXNwHe

Bard question: If I take a cantrip with Magical Secrets, does it count toward my total cantrips known and do I get an extra spell known to play with from the Bard list?
@JeremyECrawfordThe D&D bard’s Magical Secrets feature teaches you 2 spells from any class. Those spells must each be of a level you can cast. Regardless of the spell’s level (0 or higher), the spell counts toward the Spells Known number for your level in the Bard table. Bard question: If I take a cantrip with magical secrets, does it count toward my total cantrips known, since m.s. count toward spells known, and do I get an extra spell known to play with from the Bard list? And can I replace the Cantrip with Bardic Versatility?
— Phil Kunhardt (@Gweemaran) December 2, 2020
The Bardic Versatility feature in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything lets a bard replace a cantrip learned from the Spellcasting feature in the bard class. That benefit doesn't apply to any cantrips a bard might have learned from another feature, such as Magical Secrets. #DnD
