What's the reasoning on making pets such a large part of the Artificer? It doesn't really mesh with what I think of when I think of an Artificer. I understand having one pet subclass, but ALL of them focus on the pet to the exclusion of (imo) more CORE ideas to Artificing.

#dnd tip for player management: all types can be fine together as long as people are willing to allow others to have their best kind of fun. Remind selfish players of this, gently. Sometimes you just have to “fire” players with no patience or empathy.

We assume our character has one character sheet. But if you're playing a character with a *past* your reformed cleric who used to be an assassin might have a Fall From Grace and go back to The Old Ways, busting out your assassin character sheet for one adventure.

What are you implying Matt are you saying linear class progression is a fiction It's not really any different than the original game's idea that an Elf could just decide on a day-to-day basis whether they were a fighter or a cleric, representing the idea that elves lived so much longer and had been many things in one life.

They're often more interested in interacting with rules than with story, or at least the story is more likely follow from their character building than the other way around. OPTIMIZERS are often confused with POWER GAMERS, and there can be overlap, but also subtle differences. POWER GAMERS are often more about "winning" while OPTIMIZERS are about being great at something. It's not always combat. Some want to be the best healer or diplomat. (3/4)

To best engage OPTIMIZERS, tie game mechanics to story. Allow attractive game mechanics–new spells, feat, powers, magic items, etc.–to be accessed via story. OPTIMIZERS might not care much about saving the orphanage, unless a reward is the new spell they desperately want. (4/4)
