In the diagram below, character 2 has 3/4 cover against the attacks of character 1. And character 2 could attempt to hide, with the DM's adjudication.

Cover in D&D is a DM decision, using the parameters in the PLAYER'S HANDBOOK (p. 196).

If you play on a grid, the DUNGEON MASTER'S GUIDE (p. 250–1) provides additional guidance, through text and diagrams. Even then, the DM determines the degree of cover at the game table. #DnD

@Plaguescarred Can a L5 fighter attack with a longsword & a club he’s holding using Attack action or Extra Attack must use same weapon? The Extra Attack feature imposes no limitation on what weapon is used.

A stat block tells you if a monster has a special flyby, as in the spined devil.

@AntogUnyieldingAre short bows considered monk weapons? Do they grant the extra unarmed attack during attack actions? Shortbows aren't monk weapons. See the Martial Arts feature in the Player's Handbook (pg. 78).

@AseahawkfanWhat advantages does blindsight provide, if cover protects against it? Blindsight lets you spot an invisible creature in range, but that creature can still try to hide behind something with Stealth.

@FilipVukelicCan Wizard overchannel cantrips without taking damage? I hope that wasn’t oversight. As written, an evoker can overchannel a cantrip without taking damage (on my watch list). A DM could say no cantrips.
