During the design of 5e, the ranger’s Favored Enemy ability was originally called Favorite Enemy. When the ranger met their favorite enemy, by rule they had to hop up and down, clap their hands, and yell “It’s my favorite enemy!” The rest of the group was to cheer.

Whoa? The players aren’t supposed to die a certain number of times per tier? I’ve been DMing all wrong and just dropping rocks on them every other session to wipe the whole party. oh no that's totally legit. you're good. especially if you make them buy new PHBs for each character.

What are your thoughts on non-random initiative methods? I've used them a fair amount, especially when managing large groups. In that case, less chaos makes the table much easier to manage.

I dunno … look at Gary’s own later designs with Dangerous Journeys and Lejendary Adventures. Both allow for extreme character customization. Even Gary's own speculation about 2nd Edition (Dragon 103, Nov '85) he talked about adding more specialized sub-classes, specifically mentioning mystic (cleric), savant (magic-user), and jester (bard).

@JeremyECrawford How does Distant Spell interact with spells with cone or line ranges? E.g. Lightning Bolt's range of self (100ft.)? With the 'self' being the point of origin, is the range doubled? Thanks! #DnD

Distant Spell works only on a spell that has either a range of 5 feet or more or a range of touch. If a spell's Range entry says "Self," the spell doesn't qualify. #DnD https://t.co/OuGI7zBgXq
