why does the D&D game system treat the pantheon as disparate? like, each god acts like it’s blasphemous to perform or worship at another god’s altar. but that’s a relatively recent and western conception. Shouldn’t worldbuilding encourage pantheon building? The core game is silent on this issue, and in many specific societies across the multiverse faith is pantheon based. The Realms work that way IIRC – a worshipper of Tyr is wise to appeal to Umberlee before taking to sea.

i studied cultural anthropology so it's hard for me to find the right level of detail on writing mythology, so i usually leave it pretty light.

i also really try to avoid centering campaigns about the conflict between monotheism & polytheism,tho I find the idea of a monotheistic priesthood in a polytheistic world fascinating. It'd have to be Fharlanghn or something, like "oh, Fharlanghn meets many travellers on the road"

I’ve always liked that idea, too. In one campaign, I had an empire that worshipped its founder as a god and saw him as the only true deity in the cosmos
