Settling in to build an excel spreadsheet for the NPCs of my #dnd campaign. Tell me, DMs and GMs among you: how do you manage/organize your NPCs?

The skill challenge rules feel robust enough to handle simple combats, so I think they are hitting the notes I’m aiming for. Idea is to allow for a quick combat system where the PCs are certains to win, but system determines cost of victory or complications.

Why not include the option of complications or costs EVEN if players win?

That way the drama is ramped up! yes, that is the intent! Assumes they win, test is to see how cleanly.

This article does an excellent job of highlighting something I think many GM's have forgotten. It's easy to get lost in the excitement of minis, and the consistency that battle maps bring. But the mind is the only option that is truly limitless!

What is your opinion on Virtual table tops where making tokens and setting scenes with visual are extremely easy ( at times ), is ToM still preferable? Those are great tools as well! It depends on your comfort and prep in setting the scene with descriptors. I enjoy Theater of Mind because it promotes more Eye-contact and direct back-and-forth over split attention to other planes/boards.
