#dnd tip for DMs: first of the new year! If you want to DM, you can learn a lot by watching play streams, listening to play podcasts, playing in games in person or online, reading adventures and campaigns, and more. But at some point, before overwhelming yourself, just do it!

No, you’re not Matthew Mercer. You’re not Chris Perkins…
No, you're not @matthewmercer. You're not @ChrisPerkinsDnD. You're not @mikemearls, @satinephoenix, @JeremyECrawford, @sherlock_hulmes, or any other DM you measure yourself against. And you don't need to be. Because you're you, and you're perfect for your group and your table.

This! You are you in all your youness! ✨🤗✨

Truth. Get out there and DM in the style that inspires you, then change it, improve on it and roll your life experiences in, and you’ll have created a style all your own and absolutely worth enjoying by players far and wide.

“I dieeeeeeeee!”
1)
“A lovely painting, Your Majesty. It has a certain texture, a LAMBENCE, that all the other paintings in the Palace lack.”
“Indeed. It’s a one of a kind.”
“The painter’s dead?”
“No, he flourishes in our dungeons still.”#epic fantasy— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) October 14, 2018
3)
… “Oh. He paints no more?”
“Not on the skin of princes. You see, I’ve run out of traitor sons. Or any sons. Unless you know who the mysterious Hidden Bastard is. He’s supposed to be hidden right here in the Palace. …#epic fantasy One of the Great Palace Mysteries.”
“Ah. Yes. Well. I believe I CAN enlighten Your Majesty on that particular matter. Does this blade feel familiar, perchance, as it slides through your heart?”
“Iiiiiiiiieeukyukuglugluckhh!”#epic fantasy— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) October 14, 2018
5)
“Eloquently put. Yes, it’s the dagger of my mother, whom you regrettably strangled after she sought to defend the Queen against you. You foully murdered them both. Revenge is a bitch, is it not?”
“I dieeeeeeeee!”#epic fantasy “Many years too late. Tell me, what did you use THEIR skins for?”
“Urrkh.”
“Damn. Left it too late, to ask him. There’s simply no end to the Great Palace Mysteries.”#epic fantasy— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) October 14, 2018
If Jarlaxle uses a Legendary Action can he benefit from Sneak Attack to do additional damage?
Jarlaxle can milk his Sneak Attack for damage every turn, no matter whose turn it is.

Lingering Soul: if a Poltergeist takes control of a rogue PC and attacks through them, does their attack…
Under those circumstances, I imagine you could definitely rule it that way, aye!

Would you take fall damage inside a Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere?
would you take fall damage inside a otiluk’s resilient sphere? Is gravity considered an internal or external force in this case??? Debate among our two DMs. I run it as you take the falling damage. It definitely boosts the spells comedic and combat potential.

What should I do so that my “ignorance” does not pause the game?
I have a 1-shot that I’m hosting. I have only had one other session so basically new GM. I have a one of my players expects me to know everything. Said player was a former GM of mine. What should I do so that my “ignorance” does not pause the game Welcome to the DM fold!
As to your question, I would respectfully remind the experienced player that every DM starts somewhere, and to not hold you to any standard and instead just have fun. This is your game, and what happens goes. 😉
— Matthew Mercer (@matthewmercer) December 12, 2018
Then keep in mind that the rules don’t drive the game, they just provide occasional structure. Your story is what makes the game. The collaboration between DM and players telling a tale. You make the calls, and that player needs to respect those calls.
— Matthew Mercer (@matthewmercer) December 12, 2018
If you feel any nervousness about making a call or decision based on a moment, challenge, or outcome, just go with your gut! The DM’s position is making judgment calls based on the logic of the moment + the dice rolls + the players’ ingenuity. Always try to err on the side of fun
