@mikemearls Do you have any advice for people who might want to work in the tabletop rpg industry?

1. Self publish! It’s the best way to build skills and develop your voice.
2. Treat English (or whatever you’re working with) as the equivalent of your programming language. Learn its ins and outs. Become a joyful geek about it. https://t.co/UVzjpC5xKE

3. Read a lot – RPG stuff, fiction, non-fiction. Cover a lot of topics. Don’t pigeonhole yourself.
4. Play and run as many games as you can.
5. Keep track of actual play streams/videos/podcasts. They’re useful for seeing how people play.

6. Always look up the rules you’re working with, if you’re working with an existing game. Never assume you have it memorized correctly.
7. Have fun! Especially when self-publishing, focus on creating stuff that you want to see out there.

Also with regards to self publishing, what do you recommend for individual creatores wrt art design? I’m building a players handbook and thinking “Gee, I really wish I had an artist” but we’re on a budget of basically 0 dollars and I can’t draw for crap. Alas, not really an area I have much expertise in. Sorry!
