What’s the best way to keep track of NPCs’ changing responses to the player characters, both personally and as factions? I wind up with excel spreadsheets of characters who were once really important that then get lost in the mix over time. There's no best way, it's going to vary by DM.

I tend to keep notes in a notebook or a document on the computer. For most NPCs I probably just have an understanding of how they feel about the party.

I could see a faction reputation/renown tracker being useful in that case for sure.
