What’s the general consensus on abusing line of sight during combat? For example, a Wizard moving 10 feet around a corner, casting a spell, and then moving 10 feet back around the corner to stay outside of the room and completely out of line of sight.

    • Zofi says:

If the monsters see the wizard casting spells, they’d likely see it as a threat and give chase. Stealth only works until you’ve done a hostile action (or something to that effect), which spells break.

    • Anguis says:

It’s not really abuse. Depending on the DM and the monster than you could be in for a surprise yourself. Once you break LoS to retreat back, that gives the monster options. If a monster did that tactic to you, you’d wouldnt just stay there and take it.

My DM had a problem with that in our campaign. I was playing a rogue and would dip around a corner bonus action hide to gain advantage on a ranged attack from the doorway. After the first attack with adv the DM ruled that the enemy’s know that I’m attacking from there and no longer get Advantage from my stealth. He told me that after I attacked the 2nd time, already used my movement and bounce action to stealth. -.-
Proper use of action economy did not sit well with him apparently.

So here is what my DM and I have going on.
Found ring of 3 wishes, I used a wish to have the ability to once a day gain the knowledge I want.
He gave it a minute and said that sounds reasonable, you find a plant in the woods that looks magical, you fail your arcana check to see if you know what it is, and say “I’m using my ability to know that that thing is” no check you just know.
I then used the ability to know the proper phrasing for my 2nd wish (so I didn’t kill myself) now I’m using it to know how to make magic items know other languages and I’ve told my DM I’m planning on using this ability to gain faver with other kingdoms like dwarfs, to know the location of there lost artifacts are, as payment for using there forges and material needed to make those items that I learned how to make previously.

So now it’s reaching the point where my DM feels that a mistake was made letting me basically have a minor wish spell every day.

Are there any suggestions on how we could come to a compromise or fix this problem?
I feel like I phrased my wish property, and from my end the resolts are fine.
Keeping in mind knowing how to use a set of tools doesn’t give you the muscle memory to just pick them up and use them like a master.
That was told to me at the beginning, and I would agree.

From my DM he now feels like things are unbalanced for my character, and wanting to make items for my party that may also unbalanced things even more.
But I am also wanting to use this ability for RP also. Not just breaking the game.

So if anyone has a vote one way or the other for a 3rd party perspective I would appreciate it.

Also the problem came up when we took 3 days to rest up and I used my ability 3 times back to back in our 3 day downtime where nothing else happened. That’s when he realized it may be broken.

    • Anguis says:

It’s seems unclear the problem…3 wishes
      1) instant knowledge of a thing 1xday
      2)make magic weapons know languages
      * like a permanent comprehend language and magic mouth? So translation device?
      3) pending wish

So the limitation on the first one is that it is bound by the query. Your DM shouldnt be telling you more than what you are asking. Ie what is this magical plant…a mandrake. It shouldn’t include the tidbits about how they are used or dangers associated with it, unless your character has heard rumours of such. That would be a seperate query.

To make a translation device still has limitation to lose the intended meaning. A word used in common may not have a direct equivalent and thus use the closest term. It may use the casual instead of formal which may offend the race. Having it to aid conversation does not mean it automatically aid diplomacy check for races to reveal treasure locations.

As long as they’re used within some sort of restraint, the knowledge and translator item dont seem game breaking. As you stated these restrictions should be determiNed with your DM.

      • Obama white says:

I’m sorry for the confusion, I went on a bit of a rant, the only “wish” I mentioned was the knowledge one, the plant was the example my DM used to help explain the knowledge ability.

I’m using that one wish to once a day learn new language, skill , tool, or how to make magic items.

Using it in such a way , now that my dm can see how I was intending on using it and not to negate a failed knowledge check. He believes it is going to unbalance the game.

        • Anguis says:

Ah…ok…that is game breaking when used like that.

It should be restricted to Knowledge than, like information that would appear next to a knowledge check excerpt for an area of knowledge (history or arcana or nature, not all three areas in the same query) or in that moment recognizing a language enough to make it out (but not know each word or hold an indepth conversation/ ie smatterings). Further determine how this interacts with Keen Mind if taken.

Using it to know/learn profiencies should be outside of its scope. If a knowledge check would be needed for a proficiency it could be used to replace that knowledge check…but would need to be done each time just like a roll.

Those limits should still make it useful without being game breaking. This is my suggestion as a DM/ player…the determination is between you and your DM. Hope this helped though.

The spell Entangle… does a creature that makes it’s save have to make another one if it can’t escape the area of the spell? Can it become re-entangled?

    Thanks!

    • Anguis says:

No, they are not re entangled. The area affect of the spell still creates difficult terrain while it is in effect. So moving through affected squares slows movement.

I have a question regarding Counterspell and whether or not it is possible to cast Counterspell during your turn to counter a Counterspell cast by an enemy in response to you casting your initial spell. Or on your turn:
you cast spell –> enemy cast Counterspell –> you cast Counterspell to counter Counterspell

As I see it, there are 2 lines of thought on this:
    1) The PHB mentions that spells cast as part of a reaction are but a fraction of a second and are in response to a specific trigger, which means that you can cast Counterspell and still cast your original spell as per the Cast a Spell action

    2) The PHB also mentions that you cannot cast 2 spells in 1 turn (other than spell + cantrip) and that casting Counterspell during your turn using your reastion would then count as your 1 spell per turn, meaning you would lose the spell you originally tried to cast (this works similarly (but is not identical to) spells and concentration)

Which one would be the correct interpretation of using Counterspell as a reaction on your turn as you take the Cast a Spell action?

    • Your question has already been solved in the ‘Sage Advice Compedium’. Here’s a copy&paste:
Can you cast a reaction spell on your turn? You sure can! Here’s a common way for it to happen: Cornelius the wizard is casting fireball on his turn, and his foe casts counterspell on him. Cornelius also has counterspell prepared, so he uses his reaction to cast it and break his foe’s counterspell before it can stop fireball.

Out of curiosity, could a revenant become a werecreature? Technically neither living nor dead, it came up in yesterday’s game against wererats. So what would you rule?

    • Do you mean the revenant option from the UA, or the actual revenant monster from the MM?

The way I look at the Revenant from the MM, is that when it takes over a body, it turns it into an undead body (it’s creature type is undead after all) and therefor could not be changed to a were-type, it could however be changed before it became that type.

As for the Revenant subrace option, i’d rule that as long as he did not grew a new body, the existing (it doesen’t state that the creature type becomes undead) body could become a were-type.

      • Konk the untouchable says:

Yeah it’s ua. Was just curious as I just thought how cool it would be to have a werewolf revenant lol. No probs the dm from my game has ruled immunity as technically my revenant is deceased. It’s first body was dissolved by oozes and returned as a new body. So yeah full immunity then thank you
