    Hi,

Still around assassinate. I heard a lot of ppl saying that assassinate auto grant crit if the rogue hit the first or before an enemy take a turn. Asked my dm but im not sure those ppl are right. For example, im arguing with someone and we are clearly about to fight… even if i win the initiative, we can agree that tgis enemy isnt surprise I try to hit him.. so he’s not surprise..right?

    Thanks

    • Obama white says:

The assassinate only works on a surprise round, and only of you are an assassin (not any rouge) that is how you get the autocrit. Winning initiative and going before someone grants you advantage on your attacks against them before they get a turn.

So if combat begins and your enemy is not surprised but you win initiative you do still get your advantage, those are two different abilities from assassin archetype .

    • «If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn’t being worn or carried»
Keyword being “holding”, as in “in your hand”. I would rule that you can’t cast it on your own clothing, but maybe a more lenient DM would allow it. Do note, however, that Darkness requires Material components, so you can actually cast it on your focus (if using one) and move the spell with you.
And be careful: you aren’t inmune to your own Darkness, so unless another feature allows you to see in magical darkness (like the Warlock’s Devil’s Sight) you’d blind yourself. 😉

      • MR Terence Lloyd says:

That’s exactly it. I have devils sight, so I wanted to move around to melee with my own cloud of darkness. If I can cast it on my arcane focus then that is perfect. Thank you for your reply.

  2. The Kensei monk revision states that, as a bonus action, you can add 1d4 damage to a ranged kensei weapon attack. Is it meant to be 1d4 or your martial arts die? The PHB uses similar wording in the Martial Arts section when referring to the damage an unarmed strike deals so I was confused.

  3. Chris says:

The Magic Weapon spell gives “a +1 bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls”.
If this spell is cast on a Rogue’s finesse weapon, which he then uses to sneak attack, would the +1 bonus apply to each of the sneak attack dice as well since these are described as “extra d6 damage”?

    • Calculation for a Damage Roll is as follows:
Weapon Damage + Extra Damage + Modifiers

For example, a Rogue with 16 DEX that hits a Sneak Attack (at level 1, for simplicity) with a dagger under the effects of a Magic Weapon spell would do:
      1d4 [Weapon Damage/Dagger] + 1d6 [Extra Damage/Sneak Attack] + 3 [Modifiers/DEX] + 1 [Modifiers/Magic Weapon].

In short: Modifiers are added after you roll all the dice, not added to each individual roll.

Haven’t gotten an official response, (likely becuase UA: classes are not officially multiclass-able) but I am interested in your thoughts on the increased damage from the Stone Sorcerer’s Stone Aegis. It increases at lvs 11 and 17. Are these character level or sorcerer level? I would normally assume Sorc level, but sorcs aren’t supposed to gain any origin features at those levels. Also it’s written more like a cantrip’s scaling damage, which has been clarified to be character level instead of class level.

    • I believe you answered your own question yourself, UA content should not be combined with multiclassing, therefor the class level and character level should be the same.

Personally I’d assume it would scale with class level, as it’s quite powerfull for a reaction.

  5. KazinFlynn says:

Does the druid spell shelegah use the Duelist feat or extra attack benefits? And is there a reason why the damage of the spell does not increase with character level?

    • Sciurine says:

There is no reason that you would treat the multiple attacks from Extra Attack differently, so yes, you should be able to use your spellcasting ability mod instead of strength on each attack roll.

The only ‘Duelist’ feat I’m familiar with is defensive duelist, and I see no interaction between them at all. Shillelagh does not add ‘finesse’ to the club or quarterstaff to allow the feat to trigger, and even if it did the feat adds your proficiency bonus to your AC, not your Strength (which is what Shillelagh mod replaces with your spellcasting ability mod)

I am not the designers, but I assume the reasons it does not scale with level like other cantrips are the following:

      1. it is treated as a ‘utility’ cantrip, not a ‘damage’ cantrip (compare Mending and Produce Flame)

      2. Because it is modifying a weapon attack, they need to be very careful about letting it scale based on character level, lest a one level druid multiclass dip become OP. In a related fashion, how would you want it to scale? They normally scale at 5, 11, and 17. If you increase the die size to d10 then d12, you are out of options for 17. If you bump to 2d8, 3d8 etc. you risk creating odd interactions becuase weapon damage dice never normally go beyond 2 dice (as in 2d6).

      3. The cantrip already scales somewhat with level since your spellcasting ability mod should be increasing and is added to the damage. Normally spells don’t get your spellcasting ability mod added to the damage unless a class feature/feat makes it otherwise.

      4. They wanted the spell to be there as a backup, not to be strong enough to encourage people to melee as a druid.

      • KazinFlynn says:

Well druid does have shield and later on flame blade, so a melee druid is actually a good idea. What other option is there? Shield and simple melee is what the druid has! But the idea was going to be nature cleric, which again would be melee combat. Duel classing into fighter would give the Duelist feat of +2 dmg. And later extra attack.

        • Sciurine says:

Ah, the Dueling fighting style, If you wield the weapon in one hand, and use no other weapon, the +2 damage bonus should apply if you have Shillelagh up or not.

          • KazinFlynn says:

My problem would be that I only want 1 level in fighter the rest cleric so I wouldn’t be getting the extra attack. Leaving me with a 1d8 attack for the rest of the clerics life. However I could get around that later by using spiritual weapon for the bonus attack. And possibly a couple undead minions later on. Shellilagh would allow me to have and 8-10 str. Score but still act as a melee fighter with an 18 will score.

            • Sciurine says:

Remember the stat requirements for multiclassing, for fighter you need to have either str 13 or dex 13. Also don’t forget the movement penalties that come with heavy armors if you don’t have the strength for them.

If you are taking the nature domain, divine strike will be increasing your damage.

Also, with the build you are going for you just won’t have as much damage per round (outside of the nova potential of higher level spells). However you will still be a good healer and debuffer and off-tank. You can’t do everything in one build.

              • KazinFlynn says:

Going to try lizard folk for the first time, natural armor 13 Dex +2 shield +2 =17 ac. For league play it would go Wis 16 (15+1), Dex 14, int 13, Cha 12, con 12 (10+2), str 8. With the weapon attacks being one hand staff or club based on Wis score. 🙂 Yes we are preparing for the new adventure league season with the death curse, so primarily it will be healer but with the ability to get down and dirty if it has to.

There is items like “dragon tooth dagger” that is a dagger made from a tooth from a dragon, and armor made from the cast-off scales of a dragon. My question is

    1) what other weapons and items could one make from dragons?

2)what would be the benefit of those items? (dragon dagger extra 1d6 damage, and the armor dose a lot.)

For best amount of “material” assume a slane ancient dragon .
Some ideas would be dragon eyes to make “goggles of true sight” or something like that.

    • A dragonhide fedora, look badass.
A large barbeque with it’s flesh, a good time.
      Glue from it’s bones, it’s glue…

That said, I think a forum or the likes is a better place to ask this question, this is mostly used for people needing help with rules question’s and clarification’s.
