With the amount of classes and races available it makes it difficult to surprise players as a DM
@JeremyECrawford with the amount of classes and races available to players it makes it difficult to surprise players as a DM. Any suggestions other than implementing restrictions?

Here are some of my favorite ways to surprise players: twists in the story, moments of unexpected emotion, places of otherworldly wonder, and jolts of beauty or humor or horror.
I find mechanical surprises are rarely as memorable or satisfying as story surprises. #DnD https://t.co/PD8eHgUGkq

What are your thoughts on level zero roleplaying in 5e?
@mikemearls what are your thoughts on level zero roleplaying in 5e? I wrote a whole module for it! It's really a testament to the amazing character structure and backgrounds laid down in this edition. #dnd pic.twitter.com/LVokvi7wFc

I like the concept. It can be a little tricky in play – Tried it once and I found players often know what they want to be and just want to get to that, but with the right group can be awesome.

How is space different on other planes?
How is space different on other planes? If I headed “up” from the fire elemental plane a few hundred thousand miles and looked down, what would I see? Depends on the plane – for elemental planes, I believe you’d slip into the prime material. Not canonical, but I always thought of “up” from there are pointing to the center of the inner planes. Otherwise, at boundaries you’d likely enter the ethereal or astral.

Ed’s empty suit of armor
Behold infamous haunted empty suit of armor, awaiting us, gleaming bright enough to see your face in
And if just one of its wicked deadly and tireless sword-slashes bites, it’ll collect your head in yon basin— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) August 18, 2018
I’m the Lord of High Parmurr, I own shiny new armor
That despite the sweat and the stink I ne’er want to doff
As whenever I’m bare, the monsters pounce right THEN, I swear
I wonder when they take THEIR armor off?— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) August 18, 2018
Strange and deadly beasts prowl closer apace
On our weapons our lives we’re now staking
’Tis far too late now to wisely retrace
The bold dungeon-delving strides we’ve been undertaking— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) August 20, 2018
How would you rule the Soul Siphon ability for profaned Soul Blood Hunter…
how would you rule the soul siphon ability for profaned soul blood hunter effecting a wild shaped druid, if the wild shape is dropped does it kill the druid or just the shape Syphon Soul triggers upon killing a creature, it doesn’t cause them to die. Thus, it wouldn’t trigger until the druids true form was killed.

The Complete Fighter’s Handbook 2nd Edition
In 1989 TSR launched their "Complete Handbook" series which provided options on different classes, races, equipment, and settings. All that I will say on the subject was that they varied in quality. Anyway, here was the first one – The Complete Fighter's Handbook. Fight on! pic.twitter.com/wSBqU4PRYk

A good example of how management's dictate to stick so close to 1e hurt 2e. This book had two systems – proficiency groups and kits – that should've been core rules.

Do you use Action Points in your 5e games or Inspiration?
hey Keith, do you use Action Points in your 5e games or Inspiration? Personally I’ve found that esp. in high levels AP practically never run out, effectively increasing the average d20 roll by 3-4, skewing combat most of all I just use inspiration. I don’t find Hero Points to be necessary.
