Maybe if there’s a 6e we can get the anachronisms a bit more correct… i for one would love to vote studded leather off the island. Oh my thoughts on it have nothing to do with anachronism. The D&D equipment list isn't meant to be some faithful recreation of real world objects.
I just don't like that there's no d8/d10 versatile piercing weapon to round out the damage types, but there are 2 slashing.

As irksome as I find the trident, and as much as I love martial spears, it doesn't quite fit the rubric I think the war pick is perfect to fill.

My best guess at nunchaku=club is that it’s primarily made of wood wheras the quintessential DnD flail had a spiky ball on the end. I'm guessing the line of thought went something like "It's essentially a stick like a club, and the damage doesn't super matter because of how Martial Arts works."
