In #DnD, is there ever a case when a opposed ability check contest couldn’t just be be replaced by one check vs a DC set by 10+ the opposed ability bonus?

I suppose such a change gives ties to the person rolling the check.

Ive actually run init checks against a 10 + dex of the monsters and it works really well. I do that with 1 monster type. But if I have 3 or more, I try to roll for variety. Or to put 1 at 15 + Dex, one a 5 + Dex, etc. Just so monsters don’t all go in one bloc every time.
