I wonder if there is something interesting to do with the exhaustion mechanic and combat length. Longer a combat goes one, exhaustion starts to hit? Like after x rounds make a saving throw at the start of your turn… something like that. #dnd I'd only use something like that in a campaign where I wanted combat to be debilitating, potentially even for the victors.
Depends on how much/quickly to gain exhaustion, but the fact that you can only drop 1/day is killer.
