You can use kobalt another online calculater where you can fill in the amount of players, the average level of the group the cr and amount of enemies. Wich will tell you exactly how difficult the encounter is and tell you how much exp should be awarded to the party i recomend playing around with that.
If a monster does not exist in cobalt or you made a creature yourself you can also use a creature with the same cr to calculate the right exp for the party.
