Hey #TTRPG writers. How’d you get started? What steps led to your first paid work, freelancing or otherwise? 1/ Many of my new followers are hoping to get started and would probably benefit from hearing how others have done it. 2/

I got my first paid writing gig by responding to an open call on Twitter in 2009, if I recall correctly. 3/3

I've been writing since I was 10. Won a trip to Washington DC in high school, In the modern era, I started by creating my own website to write #MTG articles. Later joined EDHREC and then concentrated on my #DnD YouTube channel wrote my first published book (a Mithral Best Seller)

Pitched articles for Dragon Magazine, one got picked up (last 2e #dnd Dragon). In 3e, started writing game material to accompany @1PlatinumDragon’s Counter Collections. In 4e, pitched articles to e-Dragon Magazine, kept being called back to write more stuff (including 2 books). One common thread to my pitches: I slways went for the neglected parts of the system. My 2e article were 10 Druid Spells. My 4e articles began with one focusing on the followers of Sehanine Moonbow, then one focusing on knife-fighting Sorcerers. Look for the design gaps.

I started by publishing material on RPGnow (now DTRPG) and just kept doing it, and then when Kickstarter arrived started using that. I've never been paid to write for anybody else, though, so maybe that's not the best route!

Detailed reviews in various places caused a few small companies to ask me to edit. Then, Wizards had an open call for freelance editors, which I took. Got my first gig after that in 2003.

I entered @paizo RPG Superstar contest in 2014 and failed! Then I wrote a bunch of stuff for my home game, compiled my failed RPG Superstar magic item and the best parts of my own adventure writing, and submitted it to @Morrus when he was looking for a #dnd5e editor! Incredible luck that I got hired, honestly. Little weirdo with a lot of verve but no published credits to my name. Absolutely wild. Very happy I got that job. It introduced me to a lot of folks, like my main man @JamesIntrocaso!!
