One thing I didn’t expect to hear from people about my GMTip #1 for DnD Dungeon Mastering is “don’t read the DMG.” Please explain to me how not reading the basic DnD rules is bad for playing DnD?

Lol. I’m so confused I even wrote the sentence wrong. It’s how is it bad to read the DMG if you want to play dnd? One thing is for certain, I’m enjoying learning about the different kind of players that are in the community! Thanks everyone for sharing your perspective!

Thank you for your comments. We don’t have to agree. I’m happy to have this dialog. For those who hate gatekeeping, here is the FREE #dnd Basic Rules @Wizards_DnD https://t.co/fGcQBxiuX7
And thank you DMs & GMs for being the storytellers for your table. We learn from each other!— Satine Phoenix – ORIGINS Special Guest! (@satinephoenix) January 7, 2022
Sometimes I go back and read the DMG and *still* learn things. It's do painful to see folks give bad advice and potentially make DMing harder or even turn folks off from the game.

this is extra ridiculous because I feel like some 60% of beginner DM questions I see asked on Reddit and Facebook groups and stuff are literally already answered in the DMG!! I’ve even been planning a video about “problems you didn’t know the DMG has already solved” lolI think the problem with the DMG is that it has advanced topics that may confuse beginning DMs. I feel that if the DMG were to be divided into sections for beginner, advanced, and veteran Dungeon Masters, it would be more user-friendly. Similar to school text books. Basics first.

I think some of the miscommunication may have been in the wording “skimp out on,” which could imply that people are lazy or cutting corners if they DM without reading the whole book.
I think it’s good to encourage people to dive into DMing whenever they feel comfortable— Hmm. I hadn’t considered that. It seems odd to me that the word Skimp would Trigger people. But that’s good knowledge. Thank you.
