I feel like with the CR led rise in DND popularity, a lot of people expect their groups to be just like the CR cast and when that expectation isn’t met, they assume their party or DM is bad. Yeah, sometimes they’re bad, but most of the time? They’re just differentWhat they will learn is it’s a union of player and DM. My games are only where they are at because the players also invest, provide, and respect the story as much as I do. If they believe as you said, they may also just be bad players. 😉
