When using Thunderwave at will (as a cantrip), such as with the Boon of the Stormborn (pg. 232 DMG), what level is the spell cast at and can it be cast at higher levels if any?

    • When you cast a spell without using a spell slot (like the Tiefling’s Infernal Legacy), you cast it at the lowest level possible and can’t power it up using a higher level spell slot, since you didn’t use any. If you’re a spellcaster that already has Thunderwave learned/prepared and get this Boon, you have three options:

      1. Use the Boon to cast Thunderwave as a 1st level spell without spending a spell slot or any components.
      2. Use a 1st level spell slot to cast Thunderwave as a 1st level spell.
      3. Use a spell slot of 2nd level or higher to cast Thunderwave as a 2nd level spell or higher.

Does a dragonborn barbarian’s resistance stack while raging? I.e. a red dragonborn has fire resistance and while raging has resistance to all damage types except psychic.

    • Conandar says:

In 5th Edition D&D they do not stack, the character either has resistance/vulnerability to that damage type or he doesn’t.

“Multiple instances of resistance or vulnerability that affect the same damage type count as only one instance. For instance, if a creature has resistance to fire damage as well as resistance to all nonmagical damage, the damage of a nonmagical fire is reduced by half against the creature, not reduced by tree-quarters.” PHB p197

So for the last 2 months I have had several of my friends arguing about how a spell works, and despite having shown them in the books where this is covered, it has boiled down to getting outside mediation on the matter.

Caster A has targeted Target B with the spell Fear, There is no terrain between A and B that causes any LOS from the caster to the target.

The argument being had here is, that Target B believes that if he adverts his gaze either by shutting his eyes or turning around, that he is unaffected by the spell.

Can someone or someones please chime in on this.

    • Zoltar says:

      Bold Daniel
As a DM, If target know of the Fear spell, and close eyes (not turning), I’d rule all ST with disvantage and movement reduced by half
Fear is not a gaze but is a phantasmal image and the fear 30-foot cone could last until caster A concentration interrupt (1 minute)

  4. Line of sight generally is not the same thing as “being seen”. For example, you would not have line of sight to something if you were looking around a corner at it using a mirror. Line of sight is a straight line unimpeded by objects between you and the target. Closing your eyes doesn’t effect line of sight – you can still draw an unimpeded line from one corner of creature A’s square to one corner of creature B’s square, that’s all you need.
