Kensei’s Shot is the bonus action used to make the attack?

@JeremyECrawford Kensei's Shot states the monk can use their bonus action to make a ranged attack more deadly. Is the bonus action used to make the attack, or is it used in conjunction with a ranged attack that was made with the Attack action?
