Honorable Mention: Helmed horror (even though it's CR 4, it can punch WAY above its weight class)

Agree with all of this. The Coldlight is an amazing addition, I adapted Hythonia as an important character in my setting (I need to get that amazing mini) and the Mind Flayer is a no-brainer (hah)
I’d also add Death Knights, cause I love to rp them so much I was torn between mind flayer and death knight for my above 5 non-unique pick.
I'm way into mind flayers right now, though, and I blame Baldur's Gate 3 trailers.

Oh yeah, those trailers and the hype behind the game are making me excited to figure out a cool way to introduce them to my game soon-ish If I can make a suggestion, check out the Id Ascendant in Rime of the Frostmaiden. That makes for a great backdrop to introduce them, I think.
