How often do you check for traps? Do you pause at every hallway and room?

I hate “checking for traps” in 5e.

How often do you check for traps? Do you pause at every hallway, doorway, and room? It’s excessive and not fun. I’ve tried some homebrew things, but nothing has felt right. One check at the start of a dungeon feels wrong too. As far as I know, there is no reason this task should default to the rogue either.

Cut 10 off the DC to find the trap, what’s left is the bonus you add to the d20 roll.

The only reason would be Expertise (but also bards).

I was just talking about this earlier, an alternate of using passives to find traps. Make a “Stealth” check for the trap against the PCs’ passive scores. That way you aren’t deciding on the outcome by knowing their passives. If they call out an active check they can roll as normal (or if you want the swinginess of the opposed check, you can do that too).
