When using mob attack rules; whats the best way handle HP/PCs attacking?

when using mob attack rules; whats the best way handle HP/PCs attacking? Still treat as mob or individuals? i spill over damage – so a mob of 8 hp monsters takes 14 in one hit, I drop one and apply 6 to the next
