I took a look at the skeletal swarm in Ghosts of Saltmarsh. There’s no real resistance to single-target attacks or vulnerability to areas of effect. I wonder how important those traits would be when making swarm monsters of other varieties. What would a swarm of orcs look like? Yeah 5e has dropped that single target immunity conceit from swarms entirely.

Do you think its better to just generally make a big monster to represent a swarm? Like using a fire giant stat block to represent a bunch of hobgoblins?

I think the idea of a humanoid swarm works for things like mobs and riots. The bar brawl in Creature Codex is kinda awesome.
