If one of the party wants to roll for something even though they wouldn't succeed even with a nat 20 (In my case, intimidating a healthy, high as a kite bandit captain with only a few of the party there) what should I do?

I think if they get a high enough result, something cool always happens. Even if it doesn't solve their problem, they get a reward and feel like they did something.
