@mmarandaI’d made that ruling previously but worried that I had poorly misinterpreted the intent of the rules. Even if my ruling was different from yours, you would still be right in the game you're DMing!

golden rule
Golden Rule 38 – Stick together
Is it the DMs job to give the players a reason to stick together as a party? #rpg #dnd #gaming @ChrisPerkinsDnD @mikemearls @SlyFlourish
— Tabletop Games wJuce (@Juce734) May 3, 2016
@Juce734 @ChrisPerkinsDnD @mikemearls I don’t think so but I’d also say not to be a dick about it. If it’s going to be a problem, steer away
— SlyFlourish (@SlyFlourish) May 3, 2016
It's the DM's job to encourage the party to stick together, but the players need to make it so. https://t.co/WONKD2fvOn

Golden Rule 35 – Gratitude
I need to remember to say this every once in a while – if you play D&D or DM for a group, thanks!

Hear! Hear! #DnD #gratitude https://t.co/FgO8po6Adw

Golden Rule 37 – Don’t split the party.
@ChrisPerkinsDnD @Wizards_DnD @DnD_AdvLeague LAWFUL FLAME VS DEMON LORDS: Out The Abyss 24hr session starts 5pm! Any advice for our players?

Golden Rule 36 – It’s the DM’s table
@mikemearls DM keeps his attack rolls hidden and just says if they hit or miss. and admitted to fudging rolls. Is this fair and as intended.
— Steven Connor (@Mazoshi1987) May 1, 2016
It's the DM's table, so it runs as the DM wishes. https://t.co/veD9bNg6FB
— Mike Mearls (@mikemearls) May 1, 2016
@Mazoshi1987 it’s also meant to be a group game designed for people to have fun. Not for a DM to Cheat for his own enjoyment over the groups if the group isn't having fun, then the group needs to talk about it
— Mike Mearls (@mikemearls) May 2, 2016
@JustinTdndplay @Mazoshi1987what about spells or other reactions that need to know or the roll to decide to use them. Why cast shield blind some DMs like the uncertainty – I'm not one of them myself, but I think it's a valid style

Golden Rule 34 – D&D is theatre
@ChrisPerkinsDnD I'm writing an essay on how DnD can be used in making theatre and would love a quote from you to include. Thanks 🙂
— ileash (@eadownes) April 3, 2016
A D&D game is like a play. It has actors, characters, comedy, drama, and humanity. It is true theatre of the mind. https://t.co/F1NjyL20NA

Golden Rule 33 – Rules&Rulings
@JeremyECrawford @mikemearls I'd allow two weapons or a ranged weapon-it's not a big balancing factor. – Mike Mearls https://t.co/usnmhRJmSJ
— Smuglord (@Smuglord) March 1, 2016
@Smuglord @mikemearls The rules and a DM's rulings can definitely go in different directions.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) March 1, 2016
@JeremyECrawford @mikemearls but its frustrating to try to commit to RAW to keep players on the same page when designers give diff rulings
— Smuglord (@Smuglord) March 1, 2016
I give official #DnD rulings, while other members of the team give advice, as well as insights on tweaking the game. https://t.co/UJTrafxaF5
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) March 1, 2016
@Smuglord @mikemearlsI understand, but that AMA was done over a year ago. Your ruling today was only based on page 107 of the PHB. I've let you know the official design intent. That AMA answer is helpful if you wish to go in another direction.

Do not make the mistake of believing that the way you play D&D is the only way to play it
Do not make the mistake of believing that the way you play (or played) Dungeons & Dragons is the only way to play it.
The only time everyone ran their campaigns the same way was when Dave Arneson was the only one running the game.
— Merric Blackman (@MerricB) September 2, 2021
That’s true, but some ways suck and are best avoided (cough, cough…railroads). Railroads are actually fine for some groups. If they weren't, there are a lot of computer games that would have failed! 🙂
