I’M NOT A DUNGEONS&DRAGONS DESIGNER, I reply if I have a right answer but my answers are not official.
I’m just a librarian that collects and study designer answers.

If you need an official answer you could ask directly via Twitter to Master Jeremy @JeremyECrawford or contact sageadvice@wizards.com

  1. Zoltar, the Wisest,

I’ve been trying to contact the designers, each one of them, for over a week with no success. Just now i’ve discovered this communication channel. I know you’re not a designer, but your clarifications are equally valuable. A new campaing is about to start and this answer is crucial to my character. Here’s my question:

If a PC disguised (level 1 “disguise self” magic) as an existing NPC (or PC) uses “Friends” cantrip on another NPC, when the effect wears off, whom will the target turn hostile to? The caster, or the face worn by the caster at that moment? Would the effect be different if the caster were using an unexisting identity?

Assume the target in question never saw the caster transforming into anyone nor transforming back. The whole interaction begun e ended while the caster was desguised.

    Thank you in advance,

    Robson.

      Clever Robson

My advice is to read DMG p. 244-245 “Social Interaction”.
As DM I will rule that target will not become hostile but Indifferent and if the caster will talk to her “victim” I’ll use Conversation Reaction Table DMG p.245 under Indifferent Creature’s reaction with disadvantage check because in the victim mind there’s something unpleasant against the caster.

      • Great Zoltar,

        Thanks for the swift answer.

In a close subject, I think it’s importante to inform Ijust found out, this last minute, that my twitter profile had some glitch and I couldn’t see the answers already provided to me by Mike Mearls. I just don’t wanna let anynone think the guys let me down.

  2. Demonu says:

    Oh wisest of sages,

My question is regarding the working of the Glyph of Warding spell:
    1) Can (plate) armour and shields or skin even count as surface in regards to surface as used in the spell’s description?
    2) Can a caster only have one glyph at a given time or can he/she have multiple ones active?
    3) If yes to question 2, is it possible to place multiple glyphs onto one surface or object?
    4) And can all of these glyphs be linked to the same trigger or do they all need a seperate trigger?

The idea I am envisioning is to inscribe multiple glyphs onto the armour and shield of our Fighter with every one of them having the trigger being that the Fighter is being attacked. So that the moment an enemy swings its sword at him, X Fireball spells, Y Magic Missiles spells and Z Lightning Bolt spells (and a potential cavalcade of others with enough prep time) are unleashed upon it.

    Would this be possible?

      Mighty Demonu

PHB p.245 Glyph of Warding Spell: “If you choose an object, that object must remain in its place; if the object is moved more than 10 feet from where you cast this spell, the glyph is broken, and the spell ends without being triggered.”

      • Demonu says:

        Dear Sage,

Yes but the description specifies that if choosing an object, you inscribe the glyph within an object that can be opened and closed. Armour doesn’t fall under that and neither does a shield. Which brings me back to my question whether armour and shields can count as surfaces.

It does not state that surfaces cannot be moved around after inscribing a glyph on them. Only that if you choose an object, said object cannot be moved further than 10 feet away from the origin point of spellcasting. Yet one of the examples given for surface is a table, something that could easily be moved around.

This might seem like nitpicking on RAW versus RAI but better to have this discussion here than to pause and delay a game for a rules argument.

        • Zoltar says:

I give you my personal RAI
Surfaces are intended for things that can’t simply be moved otherwise is an object.

  3. Thiago Pereira says:

Zoltar, my gruop and me, here in Brazil, came across with a dilema: it’s about the Blindsight sense x Ring of invisibility and Blindsight sense x Cloak of Displacement. I Know that there is nothing specified on the cloak about this sense, as weel nothing specified on the ring. But this sense says that it doesn’t rely on sight, so a creature with that wouldn’t be affected by visual illusion effects, and in my opinion, The Cloak of displacement is merely visual effect. But what do you have to say about that? could you help me?

    • Zoltar says:

      Mighty Thiago

In my game Illusions affect directly your mind. PHB p203 “Illusion spells deceive the senses or minds of others …the most insidious illusions plant an image directly in the mind of a creature.”

So my advice is forget sight, Cloack of displacement plant yourself in the mind of enemy. Is like when you are drunk and you “see” two same persons in front of you.

      Have fun

    Dear Sage,

If my Knowledge Cleric multiclasses into Warlock and uses Pact of the Tome to get Shillelagh, do I need to use Charisma as my spellcasting ability or can I use Wisdom?

  5. Luigi says:

    Great Weapon Fighting Style:
“…for an attack you make with a melee weapon that you are wielding with both hands…must have the two handed or versatile property”.

a.) Asssumint you could wield them effectively, what does a boulder/large stalactite count as? A melee weapon you can throw (i.e. handaxe, javelin?) Or a ranged weapon primarily?

b.) If a boulder (or large stalactite or whatever heavy object) would be a melee weapon with both two-handed and thrown property (making it quite unique), will it therefore benefit from great weapon fighting when I throw it? Or should I get sharpshooter instead?

C.) Similarly, Great Weapon Master (feat) first effect says ” On your turn, when you score a critical hit with a melee weapon or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with one, you can make one melee attack as a bonus action”. If a boulder is primarily a melee weapon (again), and i throw it and kill/crit something, do I gain the bonus action melee weapon attack? I know I’m getting a melee weapon attack only and cant throw another boulder, but could I move towards an enemy in melee and then use the bonus melee attack?

    • Zoltar says:

      Mighty Luigi

Take a look at PHB p.147-148 on improvised weapons. Rock or other object that are not in Weapon table list are considered Improvised Weapons and follow that rules.

      a) boulder is a throw weapon only (1d6dmg) large stalactite could be a club: 1d6. Stalactite could break after a hit, I’d rule that if you roll max damage will break.
      b) GWF could be good for your use
      c) as DM I will rule that boulder will bounce to another enemy and you roll for hit it. Is like Marvel comics Daredevil (with stick) or Captain America (with shield).
