      Yes,
Also a warlock with devil’s sight and darkness is a mostly broken combo .
In my games the warlock did it twice , then the rest of the party got on him for basically taking the rest of them out of combat two games in a row . That problem fixed it’s self .lol

      • That is wrong. If a Warlock with Devils sight casts Darkenss, it doesn’t impact anyone else at all. Blinded allies have disadvantage, but blinded enemies grant advantage, so it is a wash. Also, you as the warlock, you dont get to hex (since both are concentration) so it is self limiting. But, the best way to do this is a dark pebble in the mouth. Open mouth, darkness emanates out, close mouth, everyone can see fine. Opening or closing your mouth is not something DM’s usually force you to do on your turn (we talk in combat all the time), so you effectively strobe for your allies benefit.

If you attack an unseen enemy and it is not in the position that you are attacking you miss. Darkness blinds your allies so they do not know where the enemies are. When darkness dropped the enemies would try to move around while the Warlock would stand in the darkness casting Eldredge blast. So the alliys couldn’t do much at all.
Also I do like that trick . Thumbs up for that!

          • Unless they take an action to hide (which none ever do) they are detectable via sound. I am not personally a fan of this, it seems silly to me (the rules say “noise” not “sound” and imply something louder than footfalls). But every table I have ever been at has said you know what square to choose unless the target hid. At the very least, Id say that you cant distinguish between friends and enemies in the darkness, so you might be hitting the wrong person. 🙂

            • You’re tables sound way to nice.
I’m using roll20 and literally taking away there sight and knowledge of the other players in magical darkness, they can use a perception check to maybe hear where something is, depending on roll of course, might miss, might also hit an ally.

also @johnlentesq, i’d make a NPC enemy ready an item object interaction to take the pebble from the mouth (after the first time this happens) and throw it in the middle of the enemies that can’t see threw the magical darkness, or just throw it far away 😛

        • I once played a Warlock with full-melee companions (5 players me included), so I was the only ranged character. And since my DM was a little “special (to say it nice)” he always sent enemies straight forward to first line of combat, where I was never at. I had both Darkness (and “free” since I was a Tiefling) and Devil’s Sight, so I just casted it on my focus and FREE ADVANTAGE ROLLS TO EVERY ELDRITCH BLAST! And since everyone else, both enemy and ally, were far away from me, my own Darkness wasn’t an impediment for my companions. And in the rare case that my DM had the epiphany to sent some guys shooting at me, one little Mirror Image or even a Blink and: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5X5zh00rdg

Hi, I don’t mean to be a destructive critic, but I expect more rules questions and less “what’s your favorite color?” questions hehehe… there are way too many non-rules related questions as of late…
    Just my opinion I guess

If I cast enlarge on an iron cage that is small , put a medium creature in it , close and lock the cage , dismiss the spell , what happens?

    • Officially I don’t think there’s a RAW answer, except for this.
The medium creature would be squeezed into the cage. See PHB 192 for the rules on Squeezing into a smaller space.

Personally I’d advice you to talk to your GM about this, from my own experience I could think of several things happening if you tried to force a creature into a space to small for it, like (squeeze text in example’s do not mean the mechanic squeezing but the description of it):
-The creature literally get’s squeezed to death, taking X amount of damage every turn.
      – During the enlarge/reduce of the cage the magic forces some malleability into
it, the cage forms around the creature without harming it, potentially stretching out the material and weakening the cage.
      – During the enlarge/reduce of the cage the magic forces some malleability into it, the cage forms around the creature without (seriously) harming it and breaks where it cannot shrink enough to accommodate it’s form.
      – The creature literally get’s squeezed out of the object, possibly being launched/hurtled along, might take some damage.

  3. Alex says:

When you hit a creature with an opportunity attack is it right before they leave your reach or right after? Wondering if a player with the Sentinel feat would stop an enemy from moving at all or only allow them to move 5 ft.

    • See the sage advice compendium: http://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf

      I’ll quote:
      “Sentinel
Does the attack granted by the third benefit of the Sentinel feat take place before or after the triggering attack? The bonus attack takes place after the triggering attack. Here’s why: the feat doesn’t specify the bonus attack’s timing, and when a reaction has no timing specified, the reaction occurs after its trigger finishes (DMG, 252). In contrast,an opportunity attack specifically takes place before its trigger finishes—that is, right before the target creature leaves
      your reach (PH, 195)”

So just before leaves reach, technically at 4,99999….. feet. Depending on what movement system you’re using, this might mean it stays in the same square/hexagon, or it might move almost 5 feet.

Great and wise Sage, I archive the sage compendium emails (I’m subscribed to receive them and just keep the emails in its own folder), and lately I’ve noticed the messages are being cut short with ellipsis […] and pretty much need to click on the link to read the entire message.
Is this something WordPress did or can you do something about it?
It’s no big deal doing an extra click, but it is useful to use my email as a search engine to see if anyone has already made a question I have and to read the emails on the go.
    Thanks!

  5. Kyle says:

If a creature has greater invisibility/cloak of invisibility and also has an active Helmf of Brilliance with his blazing weapon active on a Hand Crossbow, (thus emitting bright light) would a the creature still have advantage on it’s attacks?

      • Paul says:

This is what I think Kyle is talking about, at least I am now curious to know.

Since most creatures cannot see invisible creatures and you have advantage against creatures that cannot see you, if you are invisible, you usually have advantage on attacks.

Helm of Brilliance allows you to make a weapon you are holding do fire damage and emit bright light.

If I am invisible and holding a blazing weapon, does it still emit visible light? If creatures can see the light, but not me, does this negate the advantage I had for them not being able to see me? They can see a light source shaped like a weapon being swung towards them.

        • No. When you go outside at day time, and clouds are blocking the sun, you can’t see it. But it still manages to light up the entire hemisphere. This is the same thing, just on a much smaller scale.

        • Kyle says:

Yes, that was I was referring to by gaining advantage.

I was hoping there was a concrete ruling I could find somewhere. I’m not sure if using a blazing longsword or hand crossbow would make any difference, say if the pc was an archer 60 ft away.

          • Obama white says:

My feels on this is that it would be like using detect Magic to sense where a person is they are still invisible you just know where they are. So with that as the Baseline having a light source while you are invisible would make it so they would know where you are but still unable to see you thus not taking away your advantage.
Knowing where someone is an actively being able to see them are two different things in this Edition.

          • As far as I know there aren’t any specific/concrete ruling’s for this.
Personally I’d advice you to talk to you’re DM about this.

Having said that, I do think this all boils down to 1 simple question, are magic effects (including light) also invisible? if the answer is Yes and you’re shining invisible light, then obviously they cannot see you (without a special sense).

If the answer is no, then depending on situation they might be able to figure out where you are. When you are in daylight the effect probably isn’t enough to show the enemy where you are, in darkness they could figure out where you are simply based on you being the brightest spot in the darkness, and in fog they might just be able to see a floating outline of a weapon (to give a few examples).

  6. Unbalanced dragonborn says:

Ok I have a question. This may seem over the top. But I’m curious as to know how I can get away with this. I’m a dragonborn wizard with the wings feat. I want to drag an opponent through a dimension door and drop them from up to 500ft in the air. What is the best way to do this as they have to be willing to come through with me

    • Obama white says:

The first thing that comes to mind is you would first have to use friends, command , suggestion or some other effect to make them want to come with you. then when you bring them into the DD your 500ft in the air. “Woops! sorry friend (not really lol)”.
That would take a couple turns and not work to well most of the time.
If you were sorcerer you could take quickn casting and you could make DD a bonus action . That would speed things up as far as turns go.
