Do you think a religious focus would make a good backdrop for a D&D campaign? Maybe two major, but similar religions within a region, antagonistic, but not overly hostile and all other religion treated as heresy.
Too different for D&D?

You mean almost exactly what @matthewmercer has going on it his campaign? Religion is a huge part of D&D and has been since it’s early days. I think it would be too far removed from D&D if there were NO gods or religion. I wish I could see the convo (as religion had a fascinating place in many settings), but it appears I’ve been blocked by the original poster…? Alas.
