I’m here! Does the second attack from a Ranger taken after an attack action as part of that action have to be another attack action, or can it be any attack? I.e. A spell attack.

Except that the player’s handbook , under Attacks and Actions in Combat, sais nothing about the existence of a “Weapon Attack” as you just defined it. It does refer to a section called “Making an Attack” which clearly states that spells with attack roles are attacks. You can't mix casting a spell in with the Attack action.

How are you getting a second action? If Haste, then yes.
Casting a spell is considered an action. Not an attack. Key word, action. When you make the attack action you make a weapon attack and if you have multiattack as part of that action you can make another attack. It doesn’t give you another action it only allows you to make another attack. Players handbook actually states that attacking and casting a spell are seperate actions.
Using a spell would be the casting a spell action, whilst attacking would be the attack action, now you can substitute an attack for a grapple or shove attempt, this works good if you have the extra attack feature so that you could do one of those and still get to attack once (or more times if you’re a fighter).
