In your D&D games, or other RPGs with pass/fail mechanics for knowledge skills (5e: Arcana, History, Nature, Religion), what happens when the player FAILS a roll? Depends on the topic. Unless it’s terribly esoteric, on a failure they probably get some baseline information, particularly if they’re proficient in the relevant skill or have a resonant background with the topic.

If it’s highly specialized they might get a clue where to look.
