#dnd tip for DMs: the hit points of monsters in their stat blocks are averaged. Randomizing hp for specific creatures in an adventure can add drama and uncertainty. Maximize the hp of tougher creatures of their kind to provide a greater challenge.

You mean, like they used to be in the first edition or two. I specifically remember running some module where the six IRC’s had their six different hp listed, apparently in random order. Exactly. I still have old copies of AD&D adventures with pencil marks checking off the goblins as they fall, with hit points 8, 5, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1
