That would render the spell locate object way stronger then its counter part… instead of casting locate creature you could just cast locate object and focus on caleb’s coat/underwear/books… I agree with the decision from a narative point of view but its does not seem balanced It depends on the distinction between items “equipped or worn”, which I consider part of the character, or objects stowed. I wouldn’t consider the coat or his clothing separate. It gets weird with semantics.
