Here is another noob question for you. The half elf gets two skill proficiency’s with no restrictions. Can you use one those to gain proficiency with shield or one single weapon, like long bow? (Half elf sorcerer with shield)

    • Minteth says:

Hia KazinFlynn, I think you will find that it’s skill proficiencies (skills being performance, perception, history, investigation etc.) Rather than weapon or armour proficiency which a shield or weapon is.
With the optional feat rules you can gain proficiency in weapons and armour at level 4 or by multi-clasing into fighter etc. Check the multi-clasing prerequisites though as you don’t gain all proficiencies from the second class.

One more… Druid spell flame blade. Does the blade count as a melee attack to work with duel wield or haste or the ranger extra attack? Does it count as a melee weapon with disarming? And if it’s a melee spell attack do you add your spell ability modifier? Lol, thanks in advance for helping out a noob. Follow up, if it’s not a melee attack and counts as only a spell attack then how would the sorcerer quicken spell work? Spell attack and then use 2 points to attack as a bonus action? But you wouldn’t be casting a spell you’re just attacking with a weapon…

    • KazinFlynn says:

On page 193 of the PHB, under “making an attack” making an attack roll as part of a spell counts as an attack action. So technically a melee spell attack is still a melee attack action. And if your flame blade is the shape of a scimitar then it is just a flaming scimitar which would still be a light melee weapon for duel wield.

      • KazinFlynn says:

Technically you are still holding a scimitar in your hand and attacking with the weapon that you are holding, you are just using the spell modifier instead of your Dex modifier.

      • That’s wrong. There is the Attack action, and the Cast a Spell action . The Extra Attack feature triggers off taking the attack action, but not off casting a spell that grants an attack.

        • KazinFlynn says:

Sorry but the rule book clearly states under the discription of making an attack, that if you are rolling an attack for the effect of a spell then that is making an attack action. Summoning the blade is the only part the is actually casting a spell using V,S,M. After the spell is cast you are now holding in your hand, a scimitar which is a light melee weapon. Attack with that held weapon is the same as taking an attack action. I would like an official ruling on this, if anyone can show it. “You can use your action to make a melee spell attack with the fiery blade” which does not cost any extra V,S,M because the spell has been cast. Page 195 melee attacks in the PHB clearly states a few spells also involve making a melee attack. Page 192-194, “actions in combat” “attack” syays “if there’s ever any question whether something you’re doing counts as an attack, the rule is simple: if you’re making an attack roll, you’re making an attack.” “3. Resolve the attack. Some attacks cause special effects in addition to or instead of damage.” This implies spell attacks. I do believe that this has been miss played by many dm’s. Can anyone find an official ruling for league play?

          • KazinFlynn says:

Under the rules in the PHB pages 192-195 making an attack with a held flame blade that is the same size and weight of a scimitar is the same as making a melee attack with a scimitar. This has been misplayed for years.

            • KazinFlynn says:

If this is wrong, show me a page number. The flame blade is a scimitar. The scimitar is a light melee weapon. And the book says multiple times that a spell that uses an attack role is an attack action. I would like to see a page number and text that says an attack spell is not an attack action.

I’d say it depends on the type of cube used. I’d probably add a DC check if you are using the cube face 4, which blocks spell effects from passing through it. The DC check would be for commands that you send to the hand. I’m curious to see what other people think though.

I’m playing a Wizard, and in hindsight I probably should have chosen Sorcerer, but my character is what he is. My question is, can a Wizard who does not multiclass ever cast more than one “action” spell in a single turn? I’m reading stuff about bonus action spells, but I’m only seeing 3 bonus action spells that Wizards have access to.

    • Neither.
Barkskin makes you have a minimum of 16 AC ( you effectively ignore any modifiers to your AC). the spell shield gives you a simple +5 to your AC. while mage armor sets your Base AC to 13.

So (assuming 0 dex) Mage Armor + shield gives you 18 AC (13 +5).
Mage Armor + shield + barkskin also gives you 18 AC (13 + 5 and more then 16)
no armor and barkskin gives you 16 AC (minimum of 16)
No armor + shield + barkskin gives you 16 AC (10 + 5 is less then the minimum of 16)

I need some clarification: I’m playing a rogue assassin that likes to use daggers, one in each hand. In order for him to attack with both daggers in the same round, must he have them both drawn before initiative? Or is he only able to draw and attack with one on action, then draw the second but not be able to attack with his bonus action through cunning action? I realize dual wielder allows you to draw or stow 2 one handed weapons when normally you can use only one, but two weapon fighting limits you to light weapons with no provision on the bonus weapons drawing/ attacking in the same round. Any help would be appreciated.

    • This is both simple and complex to explain. Remember that you cand do a Interaction (aka free action) per turn while moving or taking any other action. One of the examples listed is, indeed, drawing a weapon. To summarize, what you can do, without the Dual Wielder feat, on your turn is basically the next:

      a) Take the Use an Object action to draw one weapon and your Interaction to draw the second one.
      b) Take the Attack action and your Interaction to draw a weapon and attack with it.
c.1) Take the Attack action to attack with your first weapon and your Interaction to draw a second one.
c.2) Take the Attack action to attack with your first weapon, your Interaction to draw a second one AND your Bonus Action to attack with it if possible (i.e. Two Weapon Fighting).

That last one may be up to your DM to judge, but I think is 100% RAW and doable.

      • Deanna says:

Thank you. I was playing it c2 but it has been argued that I shouldn’t be able to attack with both weapons in the first round because drawing and attacking with one weapon would only leave the bonus attack for the second weapon, which has to be drawn but doesn’t give enough time to attack. I think I’ll stick to sneaking up on my prey- can always have both those daggers ready without argument that way!

  5. Deanna says:

How does the drow trick of dropping a globe of darkness on an enemy and then lighting them up with faerie fire work? It says globe of darkness cancels out anything 1st level- so would faerie fire negate? And would the caster need to stand outside the globe in order to see the enemy since even the caster can not see while in the area of effect? Step by step specifics please…tia
