was clear path I feel like a look I’m
gonna make God do these three things
yeah you’d have a lot of people doing it
the trick is no one is really sure how
like there are those who morning came
would tell you that’s just it’s you know
the balance is thrown off sometimes
maybe someone is elevated demigod them
to help you know keep it in line I mean
that’s how I became so powerful the
universe looked to me and found a
champion elevated me every hue Milot e
is not the stakes are so high right the
but that’s what is what makes a tricky
you know because there are I mean that
how many adventures have spent how much
how many hundreds of thousands millions
ago pieces trying to find this answer
right it’s not just simple as now a
mobile 20 and I’ll just fight some more
monsters and get the little 21 now my
demigod it’s not that simple the it is
it is not just a matter of desire and
power and ambition but time and place
and the situation of the cosmos and
you’re standing within it so demigods
obviously those who they have risen for
mortals you know this has happened and
the history of being the rock deity
cosmos but there is no reliable path is
it possible like you can reach a demigod
stats from just being around for so long
potentially and being involved in so
many events that something just got the
weave does get wrapped up in you
attention certain extent yeah and won’t
let you go yeah I’m kind of very
fascinated by that concept of a
low-level demigod like a demigod who
just can’t die its core a core concept
I’ve always enjoyed like someone who can
never be truly powerful but they didn’t
I mean someone like you know asked him
to supplant this you know the chronicler
of Krim right I mean he doesn’t show
much overt power and crackling things
but he is he knows everything he writes
the entire story you know so there’s a
there’s an example of a character who
has come afforded themselves yeah a
power because he he’s so focused yeah
almost like a philosophy clarity exactly
like your your so you so much are you
bought in to such a degree right that
you are now part of the value this is
your role this is what you do and there
are some people say he’s an aspect of
Gillian right you know the god
neutrality yeah knowledge and more
right from my Dragonlance lore but the
but again and I love characters like
that in D&D or in theory you can visit
plant this and visit this person you
know and braceland famous you know in
those the dragon chronicles does well my
absolute favorite characters of all time
very interesting character right you
know the character yeah I think it
resonates with especially with young
people right the but again a character
who also aspired to become a w on right
and not I’m not gonna spoil the story
cuz it’s great story
it’s alright story yeah you should read
those books yeah those two trilogies
they’re fantastic and it was such a
personal story yeah that’s what was made
it good that’d be the best D&D stories
of the personal stories yeah you can
talk about I mean spend a lot of time
talking about these worldly of these
godlike figures the end of the day D and
E is other people right you know and the
choices they make and so that is that
that’s an important thing when it comes
to maybe role-playing gods yeah Timmy
gods
yes showing the the personal side like
our conversation about s Modi is there
was a time he wasn’t great at it that I
find interesting like I find like the
maybe he got to this point where he knew
every trick that was going to be pulled
on him because maybe he did get fooled
we learn more from our failures and our
successes success often blinds us to
growth right our failure forces it out
you can ignore failure do so in peril
right but some people you know but if
your can fail with open eyes you learn
more about you know about yourself and
about the world but Iowa’s I always
found my sleeve all ways found Dedes who
are more like people far more
interesting to play with than just the
gods this trip oh it’s a god the god of
you know making arrows right okay like
what’s their story right to me
characters are more fun when you have
someone like Saint Cuthbert who has like
a clear point of view and you can
imagine them making mistakes right you
can imagine some of these these figures
you know like the dead three or you know
they’re very human in a way they’re
still driven by their emotion I kind of
think of the more powerful gods as being
more remote less human they’ve
essentially sublimated to another level
of existence you know they speak more in
omens and vague premonitions rather than
coming
to you because they just can’t relate
anymore you know alright they become
also a lame
whereas yeah like you said the dead
three are demigods at this point yeah
they were adventurers Justine in terms
of cosmic history very recently their
adventures seeking to become gods and if
you’re a demigod or a god that doesn’t
mean that you necessarily have divine
power in the sense of being like a
cleric and you can heal people you you
can be just a fighter who is just yeah
you could just be yeah I’m really badass
fighter the Kalinin the sword of the
lord of swords from Grayhawk was just
such an amazing swordsman that
eventually transcended mortal limits
became a demigod the master bowl blades
I find this stuff incredibly fascinating
what I found interesting is when you
take a fantasy setting and you take
these mythological concepts and again
connect them back to a human level what
would it be like to me to God and some
gods are remote what does it mean to
worship a god of the gods infallible
right and there are people it meet a lot
of them encircle who would tell you know
the gods the gods don’t give you magic
the gods are teaching you how to use
magic
the magic they use which we have
mistakenly called the vine magic called
by magic we get it from the gods but the
gods aren’t actually the ones giving it
to us they’re teaching us how to use it
but doesn’t actually come from the gods
because invariably someone will point
out clearly if you were to think of a
deity like torn right yeah it was a good
god Walt’s Hormuz clerics well you are
all the terms clerics infallibly good no
they make mistakes isn’t it possible for
a cleric of torm to turn to evil yes it
is well when then how was their power
still right where’s their can be
actually somehow good Tiamat clerics
there’s been examples of that um that’s
interesting because yet because you do
write in the players handbook I believe
you’ve released the dungeon master sky
that you can have philosophy clerics
yeah okay it’s belief you can just be so
obsessed obsessed with trickery that it
just is in your bones just like llamosa
Steiners yeah believe it’s you know how
much of it is just mysteries of us like
you know secrets that are shared as you
advance a level you get insight in the
build building blocks reality like so
it’s a that’s what I think is fun when
you add that ambiguity that we think the
sound works but we might be wrong and
that’s when faith comes in so I think if
you’re gonna talk about religion you
have to talk about faith right like the
happy
part of it right it’s just always true
and clear and become then it become
science fiction now we’re talking about
laws right science fiction is about laws
this is what happens no one can change
it fantasy is about truth which truth is
relative right right because you know
it’s embedded in emotion it’s been an
experience so it just kind of depends on
where you’re sitting and how your angle
you’re looking at something and that’s
your truth but it varies what what is
then so often the plug of well not often
but certainly a lot someone’s trying to
become a depakote someone’s trying to
become a bitch like lit stub I think
it’s very hard for to everything I I
don’t know if I’ve ever played a wizard
who didn’t inevitably want to become a
legend
well that’s what being a lich it’s why
it’s so appealing because it is a path
right you can find the right books and
find the right rituals and it has been
like wizards are the most scientifically
minded characters we have in Randy
because Wizards want to find the rules
to find them understand them and then
live by them and use them to manipulate
magic so Lich them is such a it’s
Michael knows wizardly thing imaginable
here is a path to immortality do this I
mean it’s incredibly hard
of course wizard love to do things that
are hard couldn’t like its show off and
show it but that is very much you know
and that’s why sorcerers and wizards
don’t maybe necessarily get along
because sorcerers do what Wizards do
without going to school right and you
very purposely don’t show people how to
become leeches no because again it’s
something which not every you know it’s
not just written in the pamphlet you can
go by your gonna water deep and find in
the bookshop because it’s very dangerous
knowledge right you know someone like
black staff would just not want that
getting out cuz you’re just asking for
trouble right I mean the problem isn’t
there’s so many people who could
actually do this the problem is all the
diaw who’s who don’t have the magical
skill but they’re gonna try to sacrifice
a thousand people right like roger steps
are to make that happen because they
think well of course cuz can’t we go
back to chaotic evil versus lawful evil
the chaotic evil person would just I’ll
just try it maybe I’ll become a Lynch of
course I’ll become a Lich because I’m me
and I’m I’m you know party maybe a
little bit narcissistic that’s probably
other aspect of chaotic evil is
narcissism right like I am the only one
who matters I will happily sacrifice pee
we’ll do all these awful things just as
this manuscript says buy new these steps
I’ll become a lich except I forgot the
part where I should be like a 20th level
wizard or so you know the hard parts no
I’ll get to those eventually but I
killed all the people credits so clearly
it’s the rituals fall it’s not my fault
I didn’t make any mistakes that’s that’s
caddy cable which if I can now loop
around maybe I brought you back to
myself the point of you that maybe
Asmodeus isn’t the most evil person
right because it’s kind of horrifying to
think of a cab but now the lawful person
would institutionally make it happen
which is probably even worse because if
you stop them there might still be
they’ve built something awful that will
endure that keeps trying to replicate
these this ritual to create village do
you find that very hard is a creative
because sometimes I just want to know
the answer and I think you’ve seen that
interview sometimes I just want to know
what’s going on like I wanna know why a
met and the get the inky have any kind
of deal but the the magic of anything is
not knowing like sometimes the answer is
the worst thing you can do to anything
yeah as we’ve seen with like movies with
prequels like I don’t need to know I
didn’t need to know how this character
got there I don’t want to know
necessarily completely how magic Alex
how’s it gods makes it that’s science
fiction again right you’ve explained
everything if we’re if we were building
a science fiction game we probably have
a different view right right if we
didn’t know something our goal might be
to figure it out where fantasy is
different than it seems much more it’s
driven personally in fights by my
personal sort of you know desires and
understanding am I am I I’m seeking
truth not necessarily fact right and so
I think that’s why I naturally always
gravitate into fantasy and I like
working in fantasy cuz I’m not for me
it’s less important to say to know the
facts of let’s say Asmodeus is more to
life as to understand who is he as a
person that I find interesting I don’t
necessarily need to know his full
backstory to understand what his
personality is like because you can kind
of figure it out once you know the
personality could you know maybe
something about the past you can see the
echoes you can see how they’re and once
you pour any concept like that into
concrete then you you don’t allow the DM
or the players to like play with those
like you know because that’s the thing
is he always on to leave space for the
Dungeon Master to make
right it’s like I imagined back in the
you know way back in the day right the
Greek bards going around telling stories
I’m sure all of them put their own spin
on it oh absolutely yeah you know your
audience like your arm and Crete then
this I know the King and I’m here at Sky
Dome want to that’s part my kind of
anger room it’s gonna remind him of me
something went sideways last month so
I’m gonna edit that out of it
I’m good Bard of course we’ll do that
because a good bar doesn’t want end up
as a dead bard or in prison bars or II
running out of town in front of an angry
mob bard so you’ve got to change the
story a bit but maybe if you’re a very
good bar deal think the King doesn’t
want to hear this but he needs to so let
me find a way to get the message in his
mind without him knowing it right
fantasy
