Has there been any consideration of moving away from the linear class-based system D&D uses?

I very seriously see this crop up. Players and Dm’s thumbing there nose at “munchkin” builds because they hate other peoples ideas and fun. If you see the class system or class-less system as merely a means to explain and balance-ish powers and action economy then you succeed. If you really think a fighter-magicuser as a likely combo, it isn’t. But what about a sacred protector of an elven shrine?
